PROJECTS FOR 2009 – 2010.
Mission Statement:
It is our mission to coordinate, collaborate and disseminate timely, useful information, and perform charitable services to improve existing infrastructure, consequently enhancing productivity and quality of life for the community of past and present students. We intend to encourage educational advancement and moral fortitude through various programs and projects.
Purpose:
Manning's 85, Inc. ("MHS85") is formed for the primary purpose of raising funds to provide for scholarships, funding of educational supplies, renovation of buildings and assistance for alumni of Manning's School in Westmoreland, Jamaica (the "School"). The alumni of the school will use MHS85 as the vehicle to provide financial support for the School, its students and alumni in need. MHS85 anticipates the implementation of the fundraising program to support five activities.
| Activity 1: Scholarships |
Fund-raising Goal: US$12,500
|
MHS85 anticipates that the first 4 scholarships will be awarded to current students for the 2009-2010 school year. The scholarships will be awarded in two categories, economic hardship and academic performance. Both scholarships will require the students and/or their families to submit an application. The School will verify the academic status of the applicants who have submitted an application for that scholarship. The applicants of the economic hardship scholarship will be required to provide proof of the economic hardship.
| Activity 2: Book Drive |
Fund-raising Goal: US$12,500
|
MHS85 plans to relieve the cost of purchasing books for the families and students by purchasing the textbooks required for the subjects taught as school property. The plan is to about the system of public schools in the United States where the textbooks are the property of the school and the students are given access to the books for use in classes and at home. The student is responsible for caring for the book and returning the book at the end of the school year or semester.
MHS85 will purchase the books one grade level and subject at a time beginning with the 5th form students or seniors. MHS85 anticipates that the project will take at least 3 to 5 years to be completed.
| Activity 3: Infrastructure Renovation |
Fund-raising Goal: US$50,000
|
The infrastructure of the School is in poor shape and immediate attention and funds are needed to address the problems. MHS85 intends to raise funds towards this endeavor with a specific plan to renovate the School's auditorium. The auditorium is the most used area (apart from the classrooms), where anything from the weekly assembly, meetings, school plays and concerts are held. The community also uses the facility on a frequent basis. MHS85 plans to fully renovate and upgrade the building and to name the building in honor of Mr. Herbert Neita, the Headmaster from 1973 to 1988.
| Activity 4: Alumni Assistance Fund |
Fund-raising Goal: US$12,500
|
While Jamaica is one of the more progressive Caribbean nations, it is also economically challenged. MHS85 plans to establish the Alumni Assistance Fund to help alumni that are facing financial and medical hardships. The immediate plan is to focus on alumni living and working in Jamaica.
| Activity 5: Athletic Resurgence Fund |
Fund-raising Goal: US$12,500
|
Manning's High School has a long tradition of producing world class athletes in track and field, soccer and cricket. Presently, the athletics department is desperate need of funds to purchase equipment, uniforms and to fund travel to participate in competitive events. In addition, financial assistance is needed to update the areas utilized to train for these sports.
Funding Deadline
MHS85 intends to raise a total of $100,000 for the year 2009. Funding will be attained from donations received from alumni, interested private and public companies, and other philanthropic organizations. Funding will be allocated by MHS85 for the development of the programs, for the volunteers, to supplement travel expenses, and to support the operation, development, and growth of the School.
